STEAMBOAT

Published by Denise

STEAMBOAT, please! There’s something so wholesome and communal and heart-warming about steamboat – any suggestions where to go for the best in Singapore?

  • Parkway parade basement hv tom yum n normal soup. Soup n chilli yummy. David
  • For a real classic, try Thien Kee Hainanese Steamboat @ basement of Golden Mile Tower. Great stock, very fresh beef slices. So satisfying!
“What makes this steamboat Hainanese?” we asked. And a relative of the owners, Mr Swee called to explain – the family who runs the restaurant started off selling chicken rice and made super stock with their leftover chicken parts. Customers started asking for the stock to be used in steamboat and that’s how they diversified to include steamboat in their restaurant.
  • Denise’s recommendation: Crystal Jade La Mian Xiao Long Bao Restaurant @ Holland Village has surprisingly good and value-for-money steamboat only from 8.30pm onwards, all the way to 1am! This all-you-can-eat ala carte buffet comes with choices of soup from sweetcorn and pork to Dan dan (sesame & peanut) to Mala (spicy Szechuan pepper corn) and is YAAAH-MAY! Did I mention free fresh prawns and free flow xiao long baos? All for less than $25! The thinly sliced lamb with mala soup combination is unbeatable! And the self-serve condiment table with coriander, spring onion, flavoured oils, sesame paste, chilli sauce, soy and dark sauces makes seasoning your food fun too.
  • Hamish’s recommendation: San Katong Laksa Steamboat Restaurant, 404 Telok Blangah Road, Tel: 6275 7069, Open Daily: 11am – Midnight. You can have it ying yang style, so the pot is split between normal stock and laksa – best of both worlds! It’s unusual and unusually tasty! Shiok!!!
  • my mum’s! Ain’t nothing but the real thing. Stock prepared frm chix bones. The pot bursting with spring colour frm healthy stuff like toufu, green veg, carrot, beancurb etc no bloody stuff like liver & get this-over charcoal fire. Sorri, members only. Juz to make u drool…ha ha
  • “Ma Po Tofu” (<$20 per pax) 2 outlets opposite each other along Thomson Rd Lilian Lim.
Note: Yes, this is actually a steamboat place, despite the rather misleading name. Its sister restaurant just opposite is called ''Tian Xie Di yi shua''
Mapo Doufu Restaurant 麻婆豆腐饭庄 (Thomson), 2 Sin Ming Road, #01-01/02 Sin Ming Plaza, open daily 11am–2.30am
  • Morning Denise and Hamish, there is a place known as Ting Heng Seafood at Tiong Bahru whose promfret steamboat has got herbs, yam, fried fish, prune that make the soup very tasty and you top that up with beef, pork, meat balls and many others, another horse that got no challengers(no horse run) a must try philip

  • jia chuan steamboat. I like that it’s family run n keeps food fresh.some items are home made by the chef herself. Not the usual frozen items common at other steamboat shop. unique nonya tom yam soup. The tom yam soup is done different..a bit tangy but not too spicy for my family. Cactus rd seletar garden off yio chu kang rd. Alison Ee
  • it’s called xiao long bao buffet at crystal jade at holland village. The buffet comes with a yummy-licious steamboat set! It comes with generous heaps of shitake and golden mushrooms. Fresh slices of meat, mutton pork chicken and beef. Succulent sotong balls and fish balls! Sticks of very fresh prawns which the skin peels of with ease when deshelling them before eating. Soup comes in clear broth or spicy broth for the more adventurous! I’d totally recommend it to anyone. Of course lots more ingredients that would be too long to list! I did mention of course that it was primarily a xiao long bao buffet, but steamboat is so yummy it totally got me hooked! Dwayne lau
  • Jia Chuan Steam Boat. hidden find in yio chu kang, unique nonya tom yam with extra herbs and spices – got punch! Also got chicken broth and fish broth with ikan billis. Superb sotong balls ! 16 Cactus Road.
