HAINANESE CURRY RICE

Published by Denise

It’s all about the Hainanese-style Curry Rice this week! Essentials – a good curry, crispy pork chop and stewed cabbage. But if you know of stalls with other yummy dishes, recommend them to us!

  • whampoa market row facing a condominium. Economic rice hai nam style. Has been patronizing since I was 4 yes old and I am 48 now. Let’s start with the rice. The frangrant and taste has been the same since I was 4. Same goes to the dishes eg chap chye normally finishes at 9am, pork chop, braised egg etc… The curry gravy my son treat it like campbell soup. When I was young my dad use to bring me there. But due to being poor,he will just order rice, pork chop and chap chye for all 4 of us and we really enjoy it. Listeners listening in, DIE DIE MUST TRY . Richard soh
  • whampoa hawker ctr da one at da market side. Stall is facing da condo. U cannot miss it coz of da long queue. Open at 7am n by 11am most dishes r sold. B prepared to wait. Da curry rice hv been around 4 more than half a century thru generation. Da pork chop is heavenly soft n smooth which i cant find anywhere else, da chap chye is so soft n tasty, n their kong bak is not too fat. As 4 their signature curry i can just eat it with plain rice coz da curry is so fragrant. I hv been eating tis stall for 43 years at least once every week. Stall close on Sun n Mon. Die die must try if going to die also must try. I hv tried most of da pork chop ard Singapore but nothing beats near da scissors cut one is my 2of choice. Go try n u will sms me where to find good food in future coz I LIVE TO EAT. From Benny.
  • I am a big big fan of Hainai curry rice, unfortunately, travelled all around island to taste any good recommendation. By far, the best stall is China Street Hainainese Curry Rice stall located within Maxwell Food Centre. The must have, crispy pork chop and cabbages are simply fantastic, go with the right combination of the sweet curry and dark soy gravy. Don’t mind its presentation and sometimes serving attitude but the food is simply irresistible. Been patronising for the past 30 years or so… Dion Tay
Denise: Did a little research on this stall… China Street = Zhong Guo Jie Jia Li Fan, Maxwell Road Food Centre Stall 68. The guy manning this stall is the brother of the Traditional Hainanese Curry Rice at Old Airport Road Hawker Centre. Worth a try!

I have tried all the above mentioned curry rice but my favourite curry rice is this hidden gem at blk 65 Telok Blangah Drive. It had been around for decades as well. I love their ba par, spicy sotong and clay pot asam fish! Their price are reasonable as well. Definitely worth trying!!!
