Back from the Hong Kong Arts Festival

Hello Lunchtime Jukeboxers!
hongkong

Many apologies for being away and regretfully quiet on-air & on the blog-front. I spent a week in Hong Kong performing in W!ldrice’s production of Animal Farm, as part of the Hong Kong Arts Fest @ the Shousun Theatre (HK Arts Centre). You may have read about it in the papers?

It was an exhausting but exhilarating work trip and my first theatre tour! Besides spending hours and hours in rehearsals and performing for the very warm, receptive Hong Kong audience, we also managed to take a little time to explore some GOOD EATS (but of course!).

Here are some highlights of my Animal Farm shenanigans…

First night only in Hong Kong and am already primed to gorge on delicious Maccanese food!

Famous chicken stew with buns… Yum!

Colonial building as seen from travelator (Central to Mid-levels)

Beautiful retro floor tiles in a Portugese restaurant.

Bustling street market.

AWESOME wonton and beef brisket noodles at Man Yuen Noodle Stall (民園麵家), a 大排档 with a colourful history and the BEST noodles I have ever tasted – fine, springy and sooo TASTY!

Cast & Director of Animal Farm – Top L-R: Ivan Heng, Gani Karim, Dan Jenkins, Gene Sha Rudyn, Jenson Koh, Lim Yu Beng. Bottom L-R: Denise tan, Pam Oei, Yeo Yann Yann.

View of HK Island from Kowloon

View from ferry of Hong Kong Cultural Centre (Kowloon) where we rehearsed.

Mmm… Curry Beef (ngau-lam) makes Denise VERY happy!

Steamed rice specialty with chicken feet and pork ribs.

Chi Kee noodle shop (池記雲吞麵家) @ 52 Russell Street, Causeway Bay. Check out the Har Ji Mein (虾子面 shrimp roe noodles)! With really excellent chilli sauce you can buy in jars to take home, together with the tasty prawn roe that comes in a handy shaker to dust your noodles with. See also the plum, ginger barley drink in the background – super soothing for sore throats.

Incredible deep fried fresh fish balls served with with a brined clam dipping sauce.

Cross-section of said fish ball – note the real fishy goodness!

One night at The Fringe Club.

What one looks like after a gruelling 100 minute show!

Animal Farm will also be performed here in Singapore – 21 April to 8 May 2010 @ The Drama Centre, tickets through Sistic.
