East Coast Eats

Published by Denise at 10:54 am under Food,On Today's Show

There’s a nondescript coffee shop along East Coast Road that I’m sure is very familiar with Eastsiders, but as a Westie myself, I have only recently discovered the delights this little corner of Singapore has to offer. Previously, I’ve mentioned the tasty, atas treats Saveur serves up, and today, said same coffee shop has more wonderful eats to enjoy. Brace yourselves for a fatty, fabulous, calorific culinary caper…

The BEST fried mee sua! I love the doughy, chewy texture of the noodles contrasting with the springy squid, crunchy green veg and the incredible crispy lard bits! The sambal ups the flavour and the “wok hei” really comes through.

The Hokkien mee is also good – look how generous they are with the ingredients – lots of prawn, fishcake, bean sprouts and fatty pork belly slivers.

Char Kway Teow – a bit too sweet for my liking, but since this was shared, I didn’t order my usual extra chilli, sans dark sauce.

Look carefully – see that chunk of crispy, deep-fried lard clinging together in a sinful, delicious clump!!!

Tau kwa pau! Served hot and fresh to the table! The tofu is crisp on the outside, soft on the inside and piled high with textured tidbits – chewy fried fish cake (3 kinds), chopped hard-boiled eggs, crunchy-cool cucumber and crispy deep fried yam cake crumbs. Everything is then slathered in a sticky, savoury sauce that’s spiced like braised duck gravy.

Tasty, tangy chilli sauce with chunky green chilli.
