Killer Mee Pok

Published by Denise at 11:51 am under Food,On Today's Show

I often need a fix for my tah mee pok cravings and yesterday, I was delighted to discover this place near where we’re rehearsing for our Tasmanian tour of Animal Farm. With much gratitude to my co-actors Lim Yu Beng and Yeo Yann Yann for recommending this noodle stall! Apparently, it used to be at Paradiz Centre and chalked up a huge following for its tasty noodles. It’s since moved to Bras Basah Complex, just one of the stalls in a pretty unassuming food court tucked in the back corner. But appearances can be deceiving – I’d never have guessed that bowls of magic mee were being served up here!

The friendly mee pok man with a dry sense of humour… He must be used to having his picture taken, ‘cos he told me he had all the time in the world to pose. Or maybe he was just being sarcastic!

I like my mee pok with lots of chilli and vinegar and the uncle didn’t skimp. The noodles were springy, firm to the bite and packed with flavour from his sauce mix. I like that he added the stewed mushrooms even though I only ordered fishball noodles, not bak chor mee. The mushrooms gave the dish an extra earthy richness. Best of all, he has a tray of condiments you can help yourself to, including extra soy sauce, vinegar, pepper, lard bits and…
…this incredible cut red chilli and smashed garlic in soy sauce!!! You simply help yourself to as much as you like from the big white porcelain bowl and boy, I certainly did!

Next test – the soup with fishballs and fishcake. Awesome. Maybe it was MSG, but the soup was really tasty and cloudy with the rich pork bits. The fishballs were small but bouncy and crunchy, and the large slices of fishcake had a really appealing deep fried crust.

And what’s this? A yong tau foo-esque fishpaste treat wrapped in beancurd skin? Yes, please!

Besides fishball noodles, he also has traditional Teochew Bak Chor (minced pork) noodles, mini wok noodles and these wonderfully meaty dumplings.
