What do you wanna be when you grow up? Part 2

Published by ivytan under Uncategorized

Amongst the hospitals I visited within that week, TTSH was one of it. And I saw it all. Inside out.

Cos we did a tour within the Radiography department. Being a closet geek, I was in awe with the newest imaging technologies they had.

If you had been a fan of hospital themed drama series, i.e. Grey’s Anatomy, Scrubs, you would be very familiar with the terms such as MRI, CT Scan etc.

How many times have you imagined yourself saying these words ‘let’s order him a MRI. Stat!’

And the equipments actually look more impressive in real life. When I saw the CT, I was actually reminded of Professor X’s Cerebro.

Now a person who operates all of these is a Radiographer. And it’s more than just about taking X-rays. It is about using advanced imaging technology, which includes all of the above mentioned, as well as sonography. And you can see almost everything in the body in real time.

Of cos, we had a hand in playing around with the equipments. Or so we wished. BUT! We got to pose with it. :D

Here’s me pretending to operate a scope.

She is the real deal! An actual radiographer.

The muttons and I had to put on these ‘plastic bags’ before we step into the operating room.

Attack of the TOOTHACHE

Published by ivytan under Uncategorized

So I was up all night. Cos my bottom left tooth was aching. I thought it was bad.. until I went to the dentist and he decided that I need a root canal.

I finally FULLY understand the meaning of EXCRUCIATING PAIN.

So I paid 1.6k for the whole procedure, just to put myself through that unbearable, unimaginable, unspeakable pain. FML.

The only consolation, the dentist was very nice and cute. And married. FML.

What do you wanna be when you grow up? Part 1

Published by ivytan under Uncategorized

This is a question that most of us will come across when we were younger.

Even now, I still ask myself that sometimes. And then I’ll tell myself, you are already what you’ve always wanted to be.

When I was kid, after watching series after series of ER, General Hospital, 妙手仁心 etc, there was a point in time I wanted to be a doctor, or nurse. Which I’m sure is the case for most of us. Well that is of course before I knew how hopeless I am when it comes to math or science.

But did you know that there is more than than just doctors and nurses in the world of Health Care? There are so many elements and people that make up an operating hospital, ensuring that it is providing the services to the people that needs it.

Recently, I had the chance to do a tour around several hospitals in Singapore, and managed to look in depth into the world of Health Care, and boy was I impressed!

For example, when I was at SGH, I met the head of dietician. And then, that was when I realised that hospital food is not what it used to be! Given that we were starving, and how AWESOME the hospital menu looked, we were trying so hard not to salivate at the sight of menu.

Just imagine all the local delicacies from nasi lemak to mee siam, and then throw in a full course steak dinner, just the healthier version of it, and it tastes just as good! Now that is the work of a dietician in the hospital. Planning the hospital menu, ensuring that the patients are getting the sufficient nutrients and diet they need while still able to enjoy their food. An example of their menu:

There is so much work behind it, eg what should be used to substitute the coconut milk in nasi lemak so that its not high cholesterol, or how to cook your curry with less oil while tasting just as good. They got so good at it they even published their own cook book.

I also had the privilege to do a tour around their kitchen and MAN! It was ENORMOUS! Here’s a quick look at it:

Hotel chefs are also hired from time to time to work with the dieticians on how to enhance the hospital menus. Apart from that, a dietician also works with individual patients that need extra care, and I can only imagine how much satisfaction they get by ‘feeding’ the patients back to health.

So, do you wanna be a dietician when you grow up?

New Level of Meditation

Published by ivytan under Uncategorized

I have attained the highest level of meditation today: NUA
Sprawled across my very long sofa, comfortably cushioned, eyes half opened.
The trick is to remain in a state of nothingness, void of emotions, and stare hard into the thin air.
I remained motionless for 3 hours, by far my personal best.
In contrast to meditation, Nuaing does not make you feel refreshed and charged, nor does it make u get in touch with your inner self. Though it does get you a step closer to your flabs.
Having passed on my knowledge acquired for the day, its time i get back to my very meaningful activity of Nuaing.
